Much of this year’s problems came not from Carl Icahn and his activist approach, but because the companies he was being an activist in are tied to cratering prices in energy and commodities.
Carl Icahn has had a huge position in Chesapeake Energy (CHK) for years, but it fell 77% in 2015. He had the same problem with Cheniere Energy (LNG). This past summer, Carl Icahn took a position in Freeport-McMoRan (FCX), which is a copper and oil producer, so it’s had a double whammy of falling prices. He’s also made a terrible bet on Hertz Global Holdings (HTZ).
So given these terrible results and the discount from its all-time high, isn’t it possible that IEP stock trades even lower? Yes. Interestingly, however, the market sent the stock up about 5% Monday after the results were reported.
There is also a huge advantage to being a crafty distressed asset investor: If Icahn not only bets right, but is able to leverage his power to make material improvements to a company, that company can literally provide a three, five or even ten-fold return on his investment.
NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Chesapeake Energy(CHK– Get Report) stock soared by 19.50% to $2.39 in Monday’s trading session after financial blog Seeking Alpha argued that the company is a “prime takeout candidate.”
Shares of the natural gas producer tanked earlier this month on bankruptcy concerns, even though Chesapeake Energy released a statement assuring investors that it has no plans to pursue bankruptcy.
However, the stock has rallied about 48% during five straight trading sessions, as the company plans to pay down $500 million of debt maturing next month, Bloomberg reported.
Twelve days ago, Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK) NYSE: crumbled under an unsubstantiated rumor that the company was about to file bankruptcy. The stock gapped down from $3.06 opening up at $2.56 and trading down to the $1.50 level a massive 50% sell-off with trade being halted 5 times in the first two hours.
I have been trading over 20 years and have never seen a stock halted 5 times in one day. In my opinion, it was obviously the big shakeout; the kind that destroys the mind of an investor or trader. On that day oil was trading at $26.50 and downward momentum felt like it would never end.

We will have to see if this indictment goes anywhere in additional investigations
3/1/16: OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Aubrey McClendon, the former chief executive of Chesapeake Energy Corp., was indicted Tuesday on a charge of conspiring to rig bids to buy oil and natural gas leases in northwest Oklahoma.
The Department of Justice said in a statement that McClendon is suspected of orchestrating a scheme between two large energy companies, which are not named in the indictment, from December 2007 to March 2012. The companies would decide ahead of time who would win bids, with the winner then allocating an interest in the leases to the other company, according to the statement.
The indictment, filed in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, does not name anyone else alleged to be involved.
Wow! Talk about the talented Mr. Ripley.
WHO CONTROLS WALL STREET?
Major Shareholders – CHK (Chesapeake Energy)
The usual suspects
The info shows the Carlyle crew is investing heavily into the Climate Change Paris economic sectors. Example Carlyles take of NGP. Many other as well. Trump Icahn must be focused on the fraud and expect to win and fight for the US Gas, Coal , Oil energy markets which would not fit the “establishment” bets on Obamatrade and Carbon-Gate. I guess McClendon could have created a new Chesapeake with his American Energy Partners startup, but I suspect he had been targeted for something else. Who were the two energy companies not mentioned in the indictment? I’ll be watching this case carefully. I know it was a TRIAD operation with money (redistribution of wealth) as one of many benefits in this likely assassination.
