The toll in dead and maimed that landmines produce is equally startling. There have been more than 1,000,000 casualties of landmines in the world since 1980, almost all in the Third World. Of that number, it has been estimated that approximately 800,000 were killed and 400,000 lost limbs. Every year, there are 26,000 new landmine casualties worldwide. ~ Third World Traveler
Afghanistan (Country threat level - 5): On 5 November 2009 the United Nations announced that it will temporarily remove 600 of its non-essential foreign staff from Afghanistan following the attack on the U.N. guesthouse in Kabul on 28 October. U.N. officials stated that the employees will return after the organization finds more secure housing, which could take several weeks. U.N. workers remaining in Afghanistan will stay in a European Union police-training compound. The United Nations will also establish an office for Afghanistan in Dubai. U.N. officials stated that the move will not affect the delivery of aid and other services.
